Mocha Moms with Adult Children Network Director: Debra Stern

Mocha Moms played a significant role in Debra Stern’s mothering journey when her children were young and she was newly moved back to Westchester County after living in New York City for years.  Taking on the role of full time mother in a suburban community presented many challenges.  She joined Mocha Moms, Inc. in 2003 as one of the original members of the Westchester Chapter.   She would go on to become President of the Mocha Mom’s Westchester Chapter for many years- hosting weekly Chat and Chews in her living room for years.   When she returned to work full time she had to turn her focus to her new project as Founder and Executive Director of the Amani Public Charter School in Mount Vernon, NY and mothering her three children.

Over the years she missed the connection that she had with Mocha Moms but there wasn’t quite the right place for her to re-enter. In 2019, Debra began facing the realities of mothering adult children (children are 21, 18 and 14), sending two off to college was just the beginning of that transition.  Fortuitously, the email landed in her inbox announcing the new MAC network just at the time when she was trying to figure out the next step. Debra had come to realize that the support and connection that she had with Mocha Moms when her children were young was probably as necessary as her children grew.  The questions and concerns were still there, the need for support and sisterhood still necessary.  She is so grateful and excited that the MAC Network email landed in her inbox and that there is this opportunity to shape a new segment of the Mocha World for new MAC moms or MAC moms like herself coming back into the fold.
